Here at the Los Gatos Birdwatcher we like to inspire our customers to go beyond their backyards and into the field to watch birds especially during seasonal migrations. Let’s Go Birding, the tour division of the Los Gatos Birdwatcher, accomplishes just that with Saturday bird walks and other events. Check the schedule here [add link] If you can’t make a bird walk with us, here are a few local spots to check out:
1. Vasona Lake County Park
Located in Los Gatos, Vasona Lake County Park offers diverse habitats including open water, grassy areas, and wooded regions, making it a great spot for birdwatching. Early fall migrants such as warblers and flycatchers can be seen here.
2. Lexington Reservoir County Park
Another excellent birdwatching location in Los Gatos. The reservoir attracts a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds, especially during migration periods. Look for species like the Green-winged Teal and various sandpipers.
3. Almaden Quicksilver County Park
A short drive from Los Gatos, this park offers a mix of grassland, woodland, and riparian habitats. During fall migration, you can spot flycatchers, warblers, and other songbirds. The park’s trails provide access to different birding spots.
4. Sanborn County Park
Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Saratoga, Sanborn County Park features dense forests and open meadows. This habitat diversity attracts a range of migratory birds in the fall, including various warblers, woodpeckers, and hawks.
