Day to See The Cranes–Lodi, Ca

Saturday, January 18, 2025 • $45

If you have ever been birding with Lisa you know that her favorite family of birds is the cranes. Worldwide there are 15 different species of cranes. They can be found on every continent except South America and Antarctica. In North America, we have two species of cranes, the Sandhill and the Whooping Cranes. While we do not have Whooping Cranes in the west, we can find wintering Sandhill Cranes in California’s Central Valley.

Sandhills need marsh-type habitats to thrive and the flooded farmlands of the Central Valley provide this. They start to arrive in October and will remain until Spring. We will start this day later than most as we will end just after sunset (5:15 PM). The plan is to bird outside of Lodi located 2 hours north/east of the Bay Area. Participants will be encouraged to carpool. There will be little walking as we travel on farm roads and observe from the sidelines. Temperatures could be cold. Everyone should bring optics, layers, and snacks. Call the store to reserve your spot. We want to be in Lodi by 11:00 AM. Transportation details will happen closer to the date. Fee $45.00

Bird Song at Joseph Grant

Saturday, Mar. 22, 2025 • 8:30 am–Noon • $25

This bird walk takes place as the breeding season begins. We’ll be using our ears just as much as our eyes! Listening for birds is another skill set every birder can enhance. We will spend time concentrating on what we hear from chip notes to elaborate bird songs. How you can let bird songs help you to locate each species will also be reviewed. Carpooling will be an option or meet at Joseph Grant County Park.
