Vasona: A South Bay Birding Gem
August 22, 2025
Enjoy a morning or evening walk along
Vasona’s creek and adjacent riparian habitat, the reservoir, lawns, established trees, fish, and bugs all combine to create a dynamic birdwatching location. We’ve benefited from being close to Vasona for the past 30 years.
If you’re stopping by the Los Gatos Birdwatcher, be sure to take a short trip to Vasona Lake County Park. Its varied habitats support a nice array of birds, making it ideal for both seasoned birders and beginners. In August, the park is active with:
- Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets near the shoreline, hunting among the reeds. Watch for the smaller Snowy Egret (bright yellow feet) stirring up prey with delicate foot movements.
- Great-horned Owls also live at Vasona: This means all rodents need to be alert!
- Look for Green Herons hiding near shady vegetated edges.
- Black-crowned Night Herons, often more active at dawn or dusk, can be seen perched or hunting quietly
- Among the trees and lawns, you may encounter native birds: Oak Titmice, California Scrub-Jays, White‑breasted Nuthatches, American Robins, sparrows, and finches.
- The first fall warblers: Wilson’s Warblers passing through, Yellow-rumped Warblers returning for the winter, and others may begin to show up toward the end of the month, a sign of the fall migration season ahead scvbirdalliance.org.
Walk slowly along the Lakeview trail by the west side of the lake for peaceful birding—and a good chance to spot warblers and other songbirds as the season transitions. Enjoy your visit!
